Instagram VS Reality

It is just so easy to fall in love with a jaw-droppingly fantabulous or extravagant idea that popped up in your news feed while on the hunt for the perfect wedding flower inspiration. Unfortunately I am often the bearer of bad news when I have to explain that the fabulous picture of suspended florals or a flower wall probably costs the price of the whole wedding combined! The look of immediate disappointment is something I have still not got used to. However, it has made me discover and create various ways in which to make an elaborate design work for you while pared back to suit venues and the all-important budget- no matter what that may be.

Flower ceilings

If you want to create the illusion of a ceiling full of flowers consider using large leafy branches throughout the space. This is perfect for a marquee venue as most marquees will allow for installations. Use lighter branches full of greens for best effect as they will fill a space easily. Consider dropping little lanterns/geometric shapes from the branches for extra effect.

Remember you don’t have to cover the whole ceiling. You can pick a focal point- for example over the top table, and just create an installation over that. This will keep your budget on the lower side yet still create a wow factor for the space.

Definitely a WOW factor a full flower ceiling will blow any budget. Not only does it take a huge quantity of flowers and foliage but it will require serious manpower, a full team of florists and lots of hours! However the effect would be truly fabulous- consider delphiniums, hydrangeas and orchids for a full effect of florals that will hold their shape really well.

Suspended Displays

One Fab Day posted a pic not so long ago that I think makes for a brilliant piggy bank option for suspended florals. Using the super trendy macramé pot holders you can fill them with flowers or flowery plants to create a beautiful, effective and pretty suspended display. Dot around a space to spread colour and interest or group together for a more focused installation. Either would work brilliantly and keep your budget on the light side.

Smaller individual suspended arrangements are a great way of making a statement without going completely overboard. You can create with more foliage than flowers which in most venues I find works best anyway, regardless of budget. Generally speaking most venues are very neutral in colour, mostly white based, as adding as many leafy greens as possible will always stand out.

Long and low suspended displays full of foliage and florals really create a sense of wow in any space. When you create a full garland style long arrangement expect to pay plenty as the sheer volume of flowers needed for this is enormous! Definitely a talking point on your day and usually the perfect addition to your reception space- particularly for banquet style set ups.

Flower Wall

With any wall design, regardless of your budget you need to factor in time for creation and installation. For a smaller spend keep things very simple-using single stems connected to each other keeps quantity of florals down but the prettiness levels up! The texture and form this creates is like a piece of art. Adding dome structured greens throughout adds fullness also.

Often times a flower wall doesn’t have to be completely full of blooms to be effective. It can be created from the top of the space being used and drop down in smaller trails of ivy or longer flowers such as delphiniums. You get a wonderful backdrop that looks like a full flower wall but in a clever and cost effective way. Extra greens work great in this design.

As with the full on suspended displays the vast quantity of flowers required for a full flower wall is what will drive that cost through the roof! Seriously beautiful though and such an elegant and sophisticated backdrop. If you do opt for one of these make sure you make the piece work for you all day. This should be created so it can be moved across small distances. For example if you are having a venue ceremony you could move from the top of your aisle to behind your top table or perhaps as a guest photo prop. Make those flowers work all day!
